Poker Lingo

Poker is a card game in which players bet whether they have a better hand than their opponents. The game is played in many variations, but the objective is always to win the pot—a bet placed by all players in any one deal. Players may call (match or raise) a bet, or fold. They can also bluff, betting that they have a good hand when they do not, in order to scare away opponents who may have superior hands.

In most poker games, the best hand wins the pot; however, there are several exceptions to this rule. Some games award the pot to the player with the lowest ranked hand, while others require that the highest and lowest hands divide the pot equally. Some poker variants do not even include a standard ranking of poker hands, but simply use a kicker to decide ties.

Like life, poker requires a lot of planning and preparation. In addition to a keen eye and bucket of confidence, the right lingo is essential. Luckily, we have put together a comprehensive list of terms that will allow you to talk the talk, so you can get your game on!
