Online gambling laws are regulated by the United States Department of Justice. In 2011, the department permitted states to pass legislation on online gambling. In addition, the Wire Act of 1961 was modified to include legal betting online.
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) is a federal law that limits the ability of banks to transact with illegal gambling sites. However, the law does not apply to lottery sites.
In 1997, there were about 200 gambling websites. These included sites for sports betting, daily fantasy sports contests, and virtual poker.
The earliest evidence of gambling comes from China. In ancient times, tiles were used for rudimentary games of chance. A lottery is a low-odds game, which provides a winner with a large jackpot.

There are also a number of countries in the Caribbean that permit online gambling. In Canada, online gambling is legal, but is regulated by the provinces.
